What To do If Your Child Tests Positive for COVID

Notify Your Child's School

Send an email to the school's Health Office AND the child's teacher(s) to notify them that your child has tested positive for COVID-19.
Find contact information for your school's health and attendance offices
Report your child's absence from school to the school Attendance Office. NOTE: You only need to submit the absence once for the entire time your child is out due to COVID.
- (Preferred method) Use the SchoolPass app. Be sure to include the reason for the absence as a positive COVID-19 test result in the comments section.
- Call the Attendance Line at your child's school. Please include your child's first and last name, spelling of the last name, grade, reason for absence and a return phone number.

Isolate At Home

When people get sick with a respiratory virus, the updated CDC guidance recommends that they stay home and away from others. For people with COVID-19 and influenza, treatment is available and can lessen symptoms and lower the risk of severe illness. The recommendations suggest returning to normal activities when, for at least 24 hours, symptoms are improving overall, and if a fever was present, it has been gone without use of a fever-reducing medication.

Once people resume normal activities, they are encouraged to take additional prevention strategies for the next five days to curb disease spread, such as taking more steps for cleaner air, enhancing hygiene practices, wearing a well-fitting mask, keeping a distance from others, and/or getting tested for respiratory viruses.

If someone in your household has a confirmed case of COVID-19, you should do your best to limit their exposure to others. It is recommended to wear a mask and get tested.

Note about missed assignments

Class assignments are available on Schoology and Seesaw or from a teacher, however, students are not expected to keep up with school work when they are out sick or on quarantine. As with any excused absence from school, students will be provided time to make-up missed assignments after returning to school.

Each family needs to make the best choice for their child when it comes to COVID exposure and response.

Consider getting tested 5 days after an exposure and watch for symptoms for 10 days after close contact.
It is recommended to wear a mask.

Household contacts

If someone in your household has a confirmed case of COVID-19, you should do your best to limit their exposure to others. Individuals with COVID-19 must quarantine and may not come to school. Others living in the home can continue to go to child care, school, youth program, camp and other community activities or they may choose to quarantine. All household members should continue to monitor for symptoms and consider being tested.

Who Should Get Tested?

Vaccinations

Families should consult with their physicians or local, county, and state health organizations to learn more about vaccines and determine what, if anything, is best for their family. You can learn more on MDH's Vaccination website.

Self-Screening

Self-screening for COVID symptoms is highly encouraged. Per MDH guidelines, students or staff experiencing any of the following symptoms should stay home. It is also advisable that these individuals get tested for COVID.

People with COVID-19 have had a wide range of symptoms reported – ranging from mild symptoms to severe illness. Symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure to the virus. Anyone can have mild to severe symptoms. People with these symptoms may have COVID-19:

Fever or chills
Cough
Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
Fatigue
Muscle or body aches
Headache
New loss of taste or smell
Sore throat
Congestion or runny nose
Nausea or vomiting
Diarrhea

Things to Know:

If an individual has one or more of these symptoms, they should stay home and stay away from others, including family members, as much as possible.
Notify the school/child care/youth program of symptoms and consider calling the child's doctor or other health care provider and schedule a COVID test.
Children should stay home for other illnesses that have symptoms similar to COVID-19, such as strep throat, stomach illness, or pink eye.

Immunizations

Submit immunization records to school

Minnesota Statute 121A.15 requires every student enrolled in school to be immunized against certain diseases or file a legal medical or non-medical exemption. This law includes students enrolled in public and non-public PreK programs, as well as childcare, preschool, alternative programs and home school programs.

Students will not be able to attend school if their immunizations are not in compliance in one of the following ways:

Immunization record. The Immunization Form (or the Formulario de vacunaciones -español) can be used to document vaccinations and/or claim an exemption from the requirements for medical or non-medical exemptions. Schools will accept other versions of immunization records too as long as all required immunizations are listed.
Medical exemptions must be signed by a health care provider.
Non-medical exemptions must be signed by a parent/guardian and notarized.

Any time your child is due for an immunization, updated records showing compliance must be submitted to your child's school. Common times this occurs would be:

Any new student moving into the district.
All students entering kindergarten (including their five-year-old shots).
All seventh graders who haven't yet turned in their immunization records for middle school.
Any high school student who has received immunizations (meningococcal vaccination is due age 16-18).

Washington County Department of Public Health also provides immunizations on a sliding fee scale. The Washington County Government Center is located at 14949 62^ndStreet North Stillwater, MN and provides reduced fee immunizations to persons enrolled in a Minnesota Health Care Program [MA, GAMC, MN Care or a PMAP] or persons who are uninsured or have insurance without vaccine coverage. There is a $12 administration fee per immunization. No one is refused service due to inability to pay. Local immunization clinics are typically held on the first Tuesday of each month. Flu Clinic Information

Influenza season starts in the fall and goes until spring, with it typically peaking in February-March. Everyone age 6 months and older should get an annual flu vaccine. Find a flu clinic near you.

When to Stay Home

General stay home guidelines for illness:

Individuals should stay home if they have:

Fever of 100 degrees F within the last 24 hours, without the use of fever reducing medication ("Tylenol" or ibuprofen type medicines)
Diarrhea or vomiting within the last 24 hours
Uncontrolled cough
Mucus/sputum that is green or yellow and cannot be contained
Strep (may return to school 12 hours after start of antibiotic)
Chicken pox (may return when pox are crusted over)
An open wound that cannot be covered

Please inform the health office if your child has been diagnosed by a physician with any highly contagious disease. The information will be kept confidential, but it is important to prevent the spread of disease. Contact Health office for:
