Attendance

Regular school attendance is essential to student success. Consistent attendance supports academic achievement, strengthens relationships with teachers and classmates, and helps students develop habits of responsibility and dependability.

Reporting an Absence

Parents or guardians should report student absences through PowerSchool (preferred method) and include the reason for the absence in the comments section. Schools also have an attendance line if families need to call in the absence.

Excused Absences

The district recognizes that students may occasionally need to miss school for legitimate reasons. Excused absences may include:

• Personal illness or injury
• Medical, dental, mental health, or counseling appointments
• Serious illness or emergency involving an immediate family member
• Death or funeral of a family member or close friend
• Religious observances
• Court appearances
• Military-related obligations
• Family vacations approved in advance
• Inclement weather or other emergency conditions
• Other circumstances permitted under Policy 503

The district may request documentation to verify the reason for an absence when appropriate.

Make-Up Work

Students are expected to make up assignments, assessments, and other missed work within the timelines established by their teachers. Families are encouraged to communicate with teachers when extended absences occur.

Unexcused Absences and Tardiness

Absences or tardies that do not meet the criteria for an excused absence will be considered unexcused. Repeated unexcused absences or tardiness may result in school interventions, disciplinary action, and truancy proceedings as provided by Minnesota law and district policy.

Students are expected to arrive at school and attend all classes on time. Consistent attendance and punctuality are important responsibilities that contribute to student success.
